Over the years, we’ve experimented with multiple puppy diets. We consistently come back to ROYAL CANIN® Starter for whelping moms and young pups—because our litters do well on it and it keeps early nutrition simple, consistent, and reliable.
What ROYAL CANIN® Starter Does Well
- Designed for moms & pups: One formula that supports the dam late in pregnancy and throughout lactation, and also suits puppies in the weaning window.
- Easy weaning (“starter mousse” texture when rehydrated): The kibble breaks down quickly with warm water into a smooth gruel, perfect for tiny mouths from ~3–4 weeks.
- Balanced energy density: Helps nursing moms maintain condition and gives growing puppies steady, appropriate calories.
- Digestive support: Prebiotics and highly digestible ingredients support consistent stools and comfortable tummies.
- Brain & vision nutrients: Includes DHA and other key nutrients important in early development.
- Predictable results: Consistency litter-to-litter matters; a repeatable program reduces guesswork.
Note: Every puppy is an individual. If your pup has special dietary needs or known sensitivities, follow your veterinarian’s guidance.
How We Use It (Our Weaning Routine)
Weeks 3–4:
- Start with a warm, soupy gruel (roughly 3 parts warm water : 1 part dry kibble).
- Offer small, frequent meals after nursing sessions.
- Keep sessions short and positive; always supervise.
Weeks 4–6:
- Gradually thicken the mixture.
- Increase solids as interest grows; decrease reliance on nursing.
Weeks 6–8:
- Most puppies transition to primarily solid meals.
- Keep fresh water available at all times.
- Maintain a consistent schedule (3–4 small meals/day).
Switching foods later?
- Transition over 7–10 days: 25% new → 50% → 75% → 100%, watching stool quality and appetite.
Portion Guidance (Rule of Thumb)
- Follow the bag chart for weight + age as a starting point.
- Adjust for activity level and body condition (ribs easily felt, slight waist visible).
- Puppies grow fast—recheck amounts weekly and weigh often.
Common Questions
Is ROYAL CANIN® Starter only for small breeds?
No. It’s designed for dams and puppies across sizes. For large-breed pups like German Shepherds, monitor growth rate and portioning carefully.
When do I move to a large-breed puppy formula?
Typically after 8 weeks (once fully weaned). Many owners transition to a large-breed puppy food to support controlled growth and joint health—ask your vet for timing.
Do I have to rehydrate the kibble?
During early weaning, yes—it makes eating easier and encourages hydration. By 6–8 weeks most puppies manage softened or dry kibble just fine.
What about sensitive stomachs?
Introduce gradually, keep meals small and frequent, and consult your vet if you notice persistent loose stools, vomiting, or itching.
